After graduation from Postville High school Susan Roffman began her band instrument repair career at Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City Iowa in 1974. Upon graduation in 1975 her first repair technician position was for Pearl West, owner of West Music in Coralville Iowa.
After 7 years Sue moved on to the Music Corner in Waterloo Iowa. When Music Corner closed its doors Sue was hired by Samar Music. Sue worked along side Don Wendt, Bob Schaffer, Randy Jones now owner of Tenor Madness and Aaron Barnard (Barnard Instrument Repair in Cedar Rapids). She found herself back with West Music when they acquired Samar Music in 1997. In 2005 Sue took a repair tech position with Wichita Band Instruments owned by Gary Ray. It is here where Sue honed her skills at restoring vintage instruments.
In 2006 Sue began work with Scott Bell owner of Bell Repair in Mason City Iowa. Sue became the owner on August 1, 2010 with the name change to Roffman Band Instrument Service. In May of 2015 she moved her business to downtown Charles City, Iowa.
Our Service
Roffman Band Instrument Service is an independent repair center serving all levels of musicians in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.
Our customers range from the beginner to the professional including recreational musicians who perform in community bands, orchestras and New Horizons programs.
We offer quality in house repairs for woodwind and brass instruments from piccolo to sousaphone at a reasonable price and in a timely fashion.
We use only high quality pads, cork, and other materials and factory replacement parts. We warranty our work: 30 days on student play conditions to up to a year on pro level repads. We are able to provide local pick up and delivery for your home, business or schools.
We also offer woodwind lessons from beginner oboe and sax to advanced clarinet. Our studio is located in our music store and lessons are taught by Naomi Bienfang.
Naomi, a native Iowan whose first solo contest was in River City (Mason City), graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education with a vocal minor. Per the advice of Dr. June McDonald, oddly enough the flute instructor, Naomi auditioned for the Air Force band program. Her first duty station was Offutt AFB, Omaha, NE with the Heartland of America Band (formerly the Strategic Air Command Band). After 5 years, she was stationed in Germany with the United States Air Force Band in Europe (USAFE). Naomi has had the privilege to perform for U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries and for audiences across Europe and the United States. She has performed with Lee Greenwood, John Denver, Jay Leno, Kevin Eubanks, Chip Davis, Dr. Craig Jessop and Dr. Frederick Fennell. Her instructors have included: Dr. Christopher Gibson woodwind instructor Northwest Missouri State University, Mr. Anthony Pasquale former clarinet instructor University of Nebraska and Lincoln Symphony principal, Mr. John Wiener former member of the President’s Own Marine Band & Kansas City Symphony principal and Mr. Larry Combs former principal with the Chicago Symphony. She is performing with the Mason City Municipal Band, North Iowa Orchestra, NIACC Concert Band and the Iowa Military Veterans Band.
